About CO Safe Schools
CO Safe Schools helps community members who value education, health, and safety understand, advocate for, and achieve CO-safe school campuses. It is a one-woman, grassroots project founded by Nikki James Zellner after her two sons survived carbon monoxide poisoning at their Virginia daycare in 2020. The project works to strengthen carbon monoxide detection requirements in caregiving and educational settings, and provides resources related to the protection of people and properties from CO incidents, journalistic best practices, and real-time incident tracking and reporting.
Nikki James Zellner, founder and author of "The Watchdog Way" (2026 release) is a professional speaker and an advocate for carbon monoxide education and prevention in schools. She successfully advocated for strengthened detection laws in Virginia in 2021, and has since gone on to speak in front of audiences for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Center for Campus Fire Safety (CCFS), as well as providing personal testimonies in front of the Virginia Legislature and the International Code Council.
